Les filtres pour VMC double flux peuvent être placés à l'extration ou à l'insufflation de l'air.

Placés à l'extration il permettent la protection de l'échangeur, afin d'éviter la propagation de particules, ainsi qu'une préfiltration de l'air neuf.

Placés à l'insufflation, ils permettent d'assainir l'air neuf insufflé dans les pièces à vivre type salon, salles à manger, chambres.

A noter que certaines VMC ne proposent qu'un seul étage de filtration.

Les filtres se décomposent par classes, qui caractérisent leur niveau de filtration, dont les plus communes sont G4, M5 et F7

Certaines applications tertiaires comme les blocs opératoires peuvent nécessiter une classe F9, qui permet une filtration ultra-performante.

Il faut savoir que plus la filtration est efficace, moins l'air ne passe correctement. On parle alors de pertes de charges.

Ces pertes de charges impliquent une consommation plus importante du moteur, et une baisse du débit d'air renouvelé.
